Broad Oak CP School has joined the Eco-Schools Programme with the aim of improving the environmental impact of the whole school and its community to ultimately achieve a Green Flag Award. This is a pupil led project which introduces the children to teamwork, leadership, management, and formal meeting procedure.
The ECO Council comprises representatives from all the school classes:
Elm | Pine | Sycamore | Larch |
---|---|---|---|
Sienna | Jessica H | Charlie W | Eve |
The Council have carried out an environmental review of the school. The review included the following topics:
- Marine
- Biodiversity
- School Grounds
- Waste
- Litter
- Energy
- Water
- Global Citizenship
- Transport
The aim of the review is to identify the good things that the school is already doing for the environment and to find things the school can work on to improve. Each council member completed questionnaires together with their classes to highlight areas for improvement. The results of the survey are displayed on the Eco Council Information Board in the main school building.
As a result of the survey the following topics were initially targeted for work by the school:
- Litter
- School Grounds
- Waste
- Marine
- Biodiversity
The Council thought that the threat to our Marine environment should take priority at this time. An action plan is currently being discussed to take this topic forward. The Council have produced posters to highlight to the school why action is required to reduce our use of single use plastics, bags, utensils, cups, balloons and microbeads. All of these are a danger to marine life and are absorbed into the food chain.
