Becoming an Eco School

bin

There are almost 34,000 schools in the UK and they play a vital role in dealing with waste. Recycling schemes in schools help to improve the environment and can reduce money spent by the school on waste disposal.

As a forward thinking school we are striving to reduce our waste and improve our lives and those around the world.

A small step leads to a bigger step and better understanding of the environment.

    Paper Recycling

·                       Paper is the main form of waste created by schools, making up at least a quarter of all its rubbish. At Broad Oak we have installed a recycling point in all the classrooms and office areas to recycle all our waste paper when we can no longer use it. This is collected on a daily basis by monitors from Year 6 and deposited at a central recycling point in school. This paper is then sent to the county recycling centre for processing.

    Cardboard Recycling

Broad Oak collects all of the cardboard from deliveries and projects in class and deposits it in a central recycling point. This is then collected and taken to the county recycling centre for processing.

        Green Waste Recycling

As a healthy School we encourage all our pupils to eat a healthy diet, including fruit and vegetables. This in turn produces waste that is collected in each class at a Green waste collection point.

Connecting ourselves with the wider world

For a number of years Broad Oak Community Primary School has sponsored a boy called Deo in Uganda financially. We provide money for Deo to attend School, purchase chickens for his family, provide toys and utensils for survival. To do this Broad Oak hold a Second hand toy and book stall and cake stall to raise funds on a termly basis. We get regular reports from Deo and continue to support his way of life in Uganda.

    Improving our local environment

Each year since 2005, Broad Oak children have planted up to 100 new trees, shrubs and plants around our school grounds. We are very lucky to receive free trees and plants from The Woodland Trust who support our vision in natural areas to encourage birds and wildlife within our school community. Our aim is to create a woodland area for educational purposes in the future and to allow the children to experience a closer side to the environment.
